Last week Willow participated in the Hope of America program at the Marriott Center. It constitutes the student showcase portion for the Freedom Festival each year. 7,000 5th graders from schools in Utah County wear red, white, blue and yellow t-shirts to form the American flag with a yellow border on the student side. It's quite a sight. They sing patriotic songs...with actions and everything. They also have smaller groups doing dances on the main floor. One of the groups that performed was "Jean's Golden Girl's" made up of 100 or so ladies ranging in age from 51 to 92 (I'm not sure why they were part of the student showcase?). Anyway, after these fabulous ladies did a couple of dance numbers they shimmied their way off the floor leaving the lone 92 year old, Jane Petty, to do a solo. She ended her routine by sliding into the splits. The crowd went wild. She's the one my kids are still talking about. It was slightly chaotic, but a lot of fun. For those of you familiar with my neighborhood growing up...Taylor and Kathy MacDonald are in charge of the student showcase. You could hear Kathy giving strict instructions into her microphone throughout the Marriott Center. Brought back a lot of childhood memories. =)
